Decorating Help

OK, so we got these great new couches for our living room.
I am paralyzed with fear...
I really want to make this living room freaking shine, so I need some help in the decorating dept, if anyone has any suggestions.
I don't know what kind of coffee/endtables to get, since I am not keen on glass, and I don't want to put too much brown in the room. I am looking to make a strong statement with this room.

Help!

UPDATE: I've already gotten a few comments about the room. Great ones. I love the idea of an apple green accent color. I am currently in love with green. But, I should clarify, thats not a picture of my living room; thats the shot from the website of the store that we bought them from.
The commenters were very kind, in only saying that rug was too small for the space. That rug is ugg. Yes, I am letting that punny rhyme stay.
I think that I will find a fabric for the curtains, and see where I can go from there with color.
We have an olivey green color in the kitchen, which is just off of the living room, so I want something that won't clash with that color, but is still completely different.
I like the idea of a red, but I think that color might be overdone, and its time might be past.
Decorating is so much fun, but pretty difficult as well.

I'd go with a much lighter and less busy rug. For a coffee table, you might want to consider a really light wood, maybe in a contemporary style. An inset piece of glass within a wooden frame would be good.

I'd also get quite a few very bright accent pillows, maybe in reds or apple green or even both. Get something that goes with the rug you choose. But don't use such a small area rug. That one looks lame with the sofas.

Hey! Here via NCLM.

I would suggest picking a color, perhaps red or the color from your curtains, and using that for your area rug. Margalit is right, that one is too small and too busy for the area. I would look for a color a shade lighter than the floor, or in between the couches and the floor (shade wise). Definitely accent pillows.

I am not the person to ask about decorating. I am the person who will pay some one (happily, even) to do this stuff. I have no eye whatsoever.

I have absolutely nothing to add in the way of decorating tips (I am so-not Martha Stewart-ish, although I wish I was). But, I just wanted to say I love the couches! :)

Hmmmm well I absolutely L-O-V-E decorating and I'm glad you mentioned that the kitchen is off the room because you do need to make the colours flow (is it open from the kitchen into the living room?)

So I would say watch out for the apple green if it flows - it could be jarring.

If the rooms open onto each other I would use the olive green as an accent colour in the living room using it in vases, pillow fabric, rugs, etc. But I would use a main accent colour of gold or beige to lighten up the heaviness of the brown leather sofas. Gold is hot right now for creative tres luxe spaces but make sure you go for a rich gold fabric (not yellow and not mustard) and that you don't run out and buy loads of faux gold accessories. The idea is more subtle glamour than hoochie mama! Think about decorating a room like putting together a killer outfit and it gets easier! Hope that helps!

Emily,
That's fantastic advice. I was thinking about gold, but I'm still not sure about it. I am considering a deep slate blue. Something in the same tonal range as the kitchen color, perhaps a bit darker, would flow well, I hope.
